Posted - 06/30/2012 : 3:48:54 PM I have a 16x48 custom welded flat bottom, square bow, boat from Custom Flats in Violet, St. Bernard. My 25 HP Yamaha is not strong enough to push the boat with 2 guys, several coolers and gear. Could get a used 50 HP Mercury 2-stroke, tiller motor. Is this too strong a motor for the boat?

Posted - 07/27/2012 : 12:21:25 PM If you decide to go with the Mercury, keep the yamaha so that when the Mercury is in the shop, which will be quite often, you will still have a reliable motor for your boat. Sorry, could not resist!

Posted - 07/02/2012 : 11:47:06 PM Get whatever isthe maximum horsepower for that particualr hull (should be on manufafcturer's plate). Then you know you will always have that extra running power if needed...will be able to throttle back some and still achieve same speed as the lesser engine but at less fuel expense. Most boat dealers sells 'packages' which in most cases, the hull is under powered by the insufficient motor! JUST MY OPINION...John Castelluccio, Jr.

Posted - 07/02/2012 : 10:40:37 AM No problem at all with a 50 on that boat. You don't have to run it wide open. If you want to upgrade from the 25 you currently have, the next reasonable step up is to a 40. Most manufacturers use the same block on a 40 and 50 HP. So there is no weight difference. I would not consider the 50 too much motor.

Posted - 07/01/2012 : 08:08:32 AM I had a 1650 alumacraft with a 60 and that was what it was rated for. That boat was 16 feet long and 50 inches across the bottom at the widest point. it had .100 gauge Aluminum

Posted - 06/30/2012 : 4:19:52 PM I'm pushing my 16X48 with a 40 and It does about 28 with 2 people and all the fishing gear . I think it could use a 50 and its rated for a 50.
I don't have a bucket list but my f-ucket list is a mile long. |
