I have a 2004 90hp yamaha 2 stroke. This morning went fishing and the engine didn't really pee. I didn't notice at first but when I looked only a trickle of water was coming out at 4000rpm. I was a ways out and continued to run the boat. The engine never overheated and ran fine. When I got home I hooked up a hose to the hose attachment on the engine and the water only trickled out the pee hole but did run out much heavier around the lower unit area. Can I continue to run thw boat like this? Also does anyone have any idea how to unclog this? Or what should I do? Thanks j. Advance

Probe,probe,probe..as the man said! Weed Eater line,or heavy mono fishing line. But no wire and go carefully. If you're on the water use some heavy mono from the tackle box. When you find something that works best, put a length of it in the tool kit or tackle box.
As has been said,a water pressure gauge is a good investment. You can track the performance of your water pump and know when its time to service it.

Probe...absolutely, probe into the pee hole while the engine is running is the first course of business. Local blockage is almost certainly your issue. Had you had other more serious circulation problems they would have manifested themselves while you continued to run the boat, i.e.. over heat alarm, auto engine shut down/ diminished rpms etc....you're good to go, probe, probe, probe
Fret Not, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!

Weedeater line saved me a few times in the ponds.

dirt dabbers are the main culprit in pee hole failure. for you yammie owners the water coming out of the pee hole is coming directly from the water pump. for you merc owners the water coming out of the pee hole has already circulated through the power head and is coming out the same temperature as the power head.
when i die bury me deep, put a bucket of bait at my feet, put a rod and reel in my hand and i will fish my way to the promised land !!!! remember we did not inherit these resources from our parents, we are merely borrowing them from our children

I also fall into that classification of not being a engine mechanic but not scared to take things apart and figure it out.. I used to own of these engine and if I remember right the tell/tale- pee-tube connects to the cylinder head cover.. normally you just pull the hose off there and see if you have a stream of water flowing. If it does then the blockage is not within the engine and in the tube itself or the fitting coming out of the cowling.. that is a great suggestion to use a piece of weed eater string which should not poke a hole in the tubing( a friend of mine use a wire leader and poked a hole into the tubing one time and salt water sprayed the inside of the engine cowling-- what a mess).. I have had luck ( and donít know why ) by revving the engine in reverse while in the water. this sometimes clears the object or blockage after we went through sand or mud. If you have doubts I have always installed a water pressure gauge on all my boat( not that hard to do). That tell you great information on the condition of the water pump and if water is really going to the cooling system.

I AM NOT A MECHANIC...I would start by taking the cowling off the motor and remove the hose/tubing that attaches to the 'pee-hole' outlet. Run the motor and see if there is a higher amount of water coming from the hose/tubing than what was coming out of the 'pee-hole'...maybe something is partially blocking the 'pee hole' fitting/outlet and/or the hose coming fom the head.
Try pushing a piece of weed-eater line up through the 'pee-hole' and hose...JUST A SUGGESTION! John Castelluccio, Jr.
PS...a real mechanic should be coming online to give a better mechanical suggestion.
