Good Lord I did not mean to start a fight about who's fishing was better Florida or Lousiana.
But I did go to the never producing florida waters near teh nipple and caught 7 dolfin all about 25 to 30 pounds, 1 wahoo, 1 barracuda, and jump a blue marlin off right behind the boat. I have fished both waters and have had great success everywher. Each location has it ups and downs.

Mike, it was a good topic. If you want to ruff it and bend a rod on some serious meat hauls then come to Venice. If you want to get some sun enjoy the sand (whitest in the world ,by the way) and occasionally crank up a few snapper then head for the Emerald Coast. If it rains in Florida you can send the family to the movies. In Venice you can send 'em to the Deuce!

Yes, Louisiana is the meat haul state! But what about access to the surf fishing along beautiful beaches? What about the various charter docks that group folks together so many can get out for some offshore action. I fully understand that if LA captains do not have to participate in the "round robin" because they are solidly booked, that they will not. I also understand that with a drive that's just a little longer than Venice, I stand a pretty good chance at getting on an offshore charter at a singles fee, rather than buying the boat and seeing who I can get to show up. I live in a rural area and do not have many fisherman around. Thus, I fish the marsh here and have not much choice but to fish Florida for offshore.

I have lived in south fla. and enjoyed the fishing of that wonderful state fresh and salt the limits are less per day but the fishing was very good if you go for fun of fishing and not just how many you can bring home. If you have ever tangled with a SNOOK you would go back not just for flavor also for the fight. tarpon grouper mangroves redfish shark billfish just about any fishing you want is there. The meat haul is not. I have enjoyed both states fishing. born and raised in la moved to fla for 7 years missed the fishing here now i miss the fishing there can't say one is better than the other just the limits are so much less there..... wobblerite never wobblewrong.........

the only fish you get in fl. and not here is snook.everything else is right here, granted the snook are a great fish to go after I'm not going all the way to fl. to catch baby reds and baby trout for they are very small over there compared to our big sows and bulls.in short, for the pure sport of fishing.....LA

gitt 'er dun !

Snook the only other species? Hmm? Well another thought. It it 12/13, Today we caught gag groupers, red groupers, Kingfish, Spanish Mackerel, Goliath Groupers with in 6 six miles of the shore line. In the way back in Snook, {small} redfish and juvenile tarpon. Maybe most importantly, my anglers were in short sleeves and short pants!!

Having lived in florida panhandle for ~20 yrs, and now in south Louisiana for ~20 yrs, I can make a comparison:

Louisiana has way more trout, redfish, etc. The amount of estuary is the reason. When you fish here in La, you expect to catch a limit. The coastal areas where the estuaries are in florida are populated heavily now and pressure is immense on these. Florida has big redfish, just not as many. I have seen more really big trout come off flats in bays in florida though, with maybe the exception of Big Lake. But not nearly as many fish overall. The florida record trout is about 16lbs I recall. Louisiana will never touch that. I have seen many 9-10lb fish caught locally, and eaten. A buddy of mine from TX was visiting in Florida back in 80s, he saw some polaroids of huge trout on a dumpy baitshop wall. His jaw hit the floor. Nobody around there considered it a big deal. Trout fishing just isnt that popular. florida trout #'s are coming back though, the gill netters did a number on them there too. There are places where you can catch a fish on every cast all day. some of these are now protected (power plant canals, etc.)

Louisiana has way more fresh water fish, bass, sac a lait, catfish, etc. florida waters are predominantly either crystal clear (heavy weeds), or heavily stained with tannic acid. Both of which make for crappy fishing. the waters just arent real fertile either, but if you want a big bass, I know farm ponds that yielded 10-14lb bass when I was a kid. I know one lake where a guide brought in a stringer of 11 bass in one day, the smallest was about 11 lbs. Again, Louisiana is the meat haul state. I have never heard of anyone catching 500 bass in a day in florida, I have seen it done here. If you want to swim in the water though, Id pick fla.

Offshore? Id say they are even in what you can catch in true offshore species, including snapper and grouper. But louisiana has about 40 charter operations for offshore and florida has about 10,000. Recreation anglers probably hold the same kind of edge in #s too. In spite of the tremendous pressure, you still catch lots of fish there, a lot on natural bottom. Louisiana can give you a more varied catch though. The green and brown water species simply dont exist in much of florida because there is not much green or brown water. Here, theres a lot of it. for those species, here cant be beat. Never filled two 150 qt igloos with sheephead in florida.
