I have fished the two states alot and let me tell you one thing it is alot easier to catch fish in Louisiana waters then Floridia waters. But you much approach the two states waters in different maners to catch fish. Fl has so much clean water compaired to La..

I last fished saltwater in Fl.many eons ago when I was in the navy...1970's.Although we caught fish and generally had a blast the catches were nothing like SE La.We fished inshore in the Jacksonville area,I'll bet it hasn't changed that much. The tidal range was around 5 to 6 feet. That took some getting used to.The first time I went out it was high tide;came back at low tide and everything looked different. If I hadn't spotted my car I would have thought I was in the wrong place. There's also 4 tide changes every day.I've never fished the Fl. Gulf coast but I have heard it's nothing like here in SE La.We are blessed with some of the best marsh & offshore fishing anywhere in the world! My brother fishes Bass around Orlando and thinks it is great....I'm not much of a freshwater fisherman;Fl does have an excelent reputation for large bass.

A trolling motor cannot be used in Florida. In fact , moving too fast on the push pole will scare the sissy fish of Florida. iF ANYONE THINKS THAT THE ANGLING IS BETTER IN ANY ASPECT, PLEASE CONTACT ME FOR A REALITY CHECK!!!

I know this a fishing category but I found this while surfing Rodnreel.com. Florida has us beat on wackos! This is an actual report I saw on this site. LOL
MARION COUNTY
While crossing the SR 40 bridge over the Ocklawaha River, on Thursday, January 15th, Officer Kat Kelley observed an individual on "all fours" with no shirt on, bouncing in a tree like a monkey along the river bank. She pulled over and walked through the woods to get a closer look. She observed him pretending to shoot in the water, race across the ground sideways on all fours like a monkey, stand up and sniff at the air like a bear, and look right at her and not acknowledge her presence. She backed out of the woods and asked for SO back-up. Once on scene, the two found the individual crying over a bottle that he had "...found on his plantation that was cold..." He further talked about "...the thoughts that the white, black and red people were putting in his head about hurting himself." He went on to explain that he had worked for the FBI and NASA in the past and had walked up from St. Pete to save the bottle. Making the decision to Baker Act the individual, Officer Kelley asked the man to turn around. He did and as Officer Kelley approached him to put handcuffs on, he wheeled around yelling, "...he ought to put a gun to both of their heads". The deputy pulled out his taser, got target acquisition, advising the EDP what was about to happen. At this point the man calmed down long enough for Officer Kelley to get the cuffs on him, and then started yelling that she had jabbed his back with hypodermic needles, injecting "Mars fluid" into him. He was turned over to Marion County SO for transport and processing.
Happy Fishing!

I live in Louisiana and do most of my fishing here. While I agree that it is easier to catch an abundance of fish in Louisiana, especially with a good boat, for beach Fisherman it is hard to beat the Pompano Run each Spring and Fall in Florida. Pompano up to 5lbs can be taken from Panhadle beaches between the first two sandbars with malt crabs (aka sand fleas), raked from the surf, year round but in good numbers April-June and Sept-Nov. The limit is a respectable 10 per day. One day last spring I was fishing the surf in Perdido Key for Pompano and caught 10 Bull Reds, the smallest 26" the largest 36", along with 4 or 5 Pompano. I had to quit because I ran out of weights from getting broken off so many times as I was fishing multiple rods with 8lb, 12lb, & 15lb test. As it gets warmer there are places where you can catch nice big specks in the Marsh Grass in the bay as the sun comes up, walk 1/4 mile tops across the sand dunes and catch Pompano, Whiting, Bluefish with an occasional Cobia, Drum, Flounder, Red, or Sheephead thrown in all while primitive camping for FREE on one of the more beautiful and least populated (CLEAN) beaches in the country a mere 210 miles from New Orleans. When the conditions are on it doesn't get much better for a Beach Fisherman.
PS Has anyone had luck catching Pompano close to shore in LA?

It's easy to tell that we've had a stretch of bad weather here the last few days by the nonsense that appears on the forum. We need to get a raincoat an go battle the elements.

My brother-in-law lives in Flordia, not far from Pensicola bay. We probably visit twice a year, and every time we visit we fish. He has yet to put me on a decent mess of fish. Now when he comes here we mop up. I can only come up with two possibilities; Either I'm a better guide in my backyard than he is in his backyard, or their aint no fish in Florida

Once took a tour of the bay behind Destin, can't remember it's exact name. I rode around with a local guide, and explained that my home waters were SE Louisiana and told him about some of the catches I had recently made. Though the catches were honestly not much to brag about here, the guide was quite humbled as he told me about how that same number is rarely caught in his area. I do know that their speck and redfish limits are far different, with a slot limit for specks as well i think. If they even catch it, usually they have to throw it back! Glad to be in LA!

I am new to the board and would like to chime in on this topic. This debate is quite interesting. However, I would like to add all of the following variables.
1) Venice is an unbelievable place to fish, note: The run to the rigs is quite distant, yellowfins, wahoo, dolphin"mahi" and marlin just to name a few. This is Louisiana's mainstay.
2) Florida has numerous, I repeat numerous hotspots for species of fish that are bar none the best in the world. i.e.) snook, tarpon, permit, bonefish, redfish, african pompano, sailfish, wahoo, tuna, dolphin, marlin, kingfish, my favorite "SWORDFISH". You have to remember, as far as the run you make to the rigs, we are already in the Bahamas. Key West Fishing, Cape Canaveral, Miami, Destin, Palm Beach, Dry Tortugas, - CAY SAL BANKS..... Just to name a few. Giant Mystic Grouper, Goliath Grouper in the Keys. There is absolutely no comparison for variety and destinations in Florida. What do you want to catch???? Florida has your answer. Sailfish???? Sure we'll go catch 15 in one day Mexico style. Marlin???? Sure 60 mile run East and we're there. Wahoo in multiple #'s refer to Marlin fishery. Swordfish??? Ahh the battlewagon of the sea....... No problem here, averaging 3 to 5 bites a night. 1 fish boated over 100Lbs. last 4 trips. Biggest to date a shade over 500Lbs. I think I've made my point here. Everything Venice, note one place in LA. has to offer, FL. can and more.... Much more..... Definately not taking anything away from Venice. Just stating a fact that this topic has no issue regarding La. fishery compared to FL. Question for you cajun boys.... Have you ever caught a 100LB. Wahoo 1 mile offshore in 150ft. of deep blue water. I didn't think so.... In Ft. Lauderdale, I have July of '00.
Take me to the rigs - I'll tear em up..... With hardtails aka: Blue Runners, bait of choice for Swordies.

I didn't realize that a 10 or 12 mile run to the rigs was so far. I also didn't know that the Bahamas were only 12 miles from Florida. As far as the wahoo being caught one mile offshore, yes, tuna, wahoo, etc. are at times caught within site of the beach in Venice. And Florida the best spot in the world bar none for redfish??? Please check your facts before making such a foolish statement. I will concede that Florida has superior fishing for snook and bonefish though.
Is it time for a cold beer yet? |

I have fished the east coast of Florida in the Edgewater area south of Daytona Beach where I grew up. Of course, fishing there now is much tougher than it was 20 years ago. Limits and sizes are much more restrictive than La. A lot of the marsh and breeding grounds have been destroyed. But the cost of an out of state license is much cheaper than when my brother comes here to fish. Water is clearer so gigging flounder at night is great. Florida has one thing that La doesn't and I miss a lot and that is snook. Snook are a real fighter on light tackle or a fly rod. But I wouldn't trade La fishing for Fl fishing.
