I'm thinking about getting a mud boat next year. I definitly want a surface drive set up. Any opinions on which manufacturer is the better?

pro drive stays down in the mud works better than go devil in hydrilla and has reverse
go devil has a free floating shaft easier to control no reverse (i believe 2 foot longer in the tail to reach out to make turn in the mud which is a plus)

ME personally I would choose pro drive. But thats my choice. You should go test drive one and pick from there they are both 2 totally different motors.

Never used either one but at the sport show the movie clip with the twin pro drive type sure looked impressive. I sure would like to play with one for a while.

The ability to reverse is the best selling point to me. I had to dig my way out some spots and used the forward/reverse to dig my way out. I would still be stuck out there if I did not have the ability to rock the mudboat backward and forward like a truck. I actually created a new "canal" between two ponds some years back.

I bought a Mudbuddy last week and love it. It doesn't have reverse but haven't need it.Dont let the water Hyacinth fool you.If it is thick the outdrive won't penetrate it and you will stop on it.If the ducks don't fly,the mud will.

We have a mudbuddy 31hp hyper drive, its mounted on a 17x44 gator tail mud boat. This rig works very well for us, 2 men and gear about 17mpr,2 men no huntig gear about 21 mph. That being said, all these motors are a work in progress, adjustments being made all the time.I believe pro-drive and gator tail are they only ones w/reverse at this time.If you are going to buy it next year you have plenty of time to check them out. let folks know where you live I'm sure they will let you look at their rigs and they may take you out.As far as which is best, I know folks who have pro-drive,gator tail and go-devil, all seem happy with their rigs.

Thanks all for your comments. Reverse is a must for me as I will be using it in skinny sloughs that have a lot of switch back turns. I'm gonna also have to stick with a shorter boat(16) for the same reason.
I will be toting a pirogue or two so I'll probably need to step up the horsepower a little. Merry Christmas!

Pro Drive and Gator Tail have reverse I believe.

I have a mudbuddy hyperdrive and it has been good. No reverse on mine but I wouldn't be surprised if they will come out with one. They are always trying to stay ahead of the group. They are coming out with a 45hp engine I believe. http://www.mudbuddy.com/

The prodrive I believe is limited to 25hp. It is more like an outboard and when you hit something it really bangs. The hyperdrive, being neutrally balance, bounces over it. If on the right boat the pro-drive will do well.

Just out of curiosity, do you realize the amount of mud that will be thrown on you when you put a surface drive mud motor in reverse?I don't think it's needed, even in what you describe, a push pole will push you right off if you end up on the bank as you can't make a turn. I have run a 35 hpyer drive and absolutley love it. I just can't seem to make a good argument for reverse. However I do really like the neutral.

I have mine on a 17'44" gator trax with the hunt deck. I spent three years looking at their boats and tinkering on my floor plan before I had it built. It to me is the best duck boat out there period. I looked for a long time. I have known the owners since they were just a backyard type operation and they have grown in to a very profitable operation. However they still build the boats custom to your specifications, and their service is just as good if not better than what it used to be. I am very impressed with them.
