What is the best hook to use on a bird rig?

1/4 oz leadhead or speculizer usually works pretty good for seagulls. I would recommend at least a 4/0 circle hook for brown pelicans, make sure they pull on the rod and don't set the hook or else you might pull the hook out of their mouth. Bream hooks usually do the trick for terns, and fly tackle is good for most all other small birds.

I have no idea what you are talking about, could you explain?

It might not be fair but Alka Seltzers were always GREAT for seagulls and we always used finger mullets for pelicans...but you have to let them take it before you set the hook! Circle hooks for birds are a new thing...we always catch birds with just about any hook!

Also, we catch alot of hawks and owls with steel traps and I bet you can use them if you bait em right for those water birds. I bet you can put some minnows in a Zip-Loc and set that on a steel trap real easy and put it in shallow water and catch all kinds of wading birds! Hope this helps!

I prefer a net! I have a custom made attachment for my fish net. It is a telescopic design made of lightweight aluminum tubing, that allows me to connect my net to my 10 foot PVC Cajun anchor. Adding the telescopic attachment between the two, I can reach a whopping 26 feet in the air. I've gotten pretty good at tossing large cocahoe minnows into just the proper trajectory with my left hand to entice the birds into an aerial assault. I then net them in mid flight with my right hand.

I caught a really nice sized Pelican with double rigged cocahoes. The pelican was not too pleased with it though. One of the hooks embedded in his wing. We held a net over him and ran the barb out the other side and clipped it off. He didn't cooperate very well and took off without saying thanks.
