Re: '81 Evinrude 70HP
I recenlty discovered my dash voltage gage was showing 10.5V and it seems "jumpy". I checked the battery with multi-meter and it showed 12.9V while engine was running or not. I've been keeping an eye on it for the last few trips and it always read 12.9V with without the motor running. I use a depth sounder and live well for hours. If the battery was not charging I think I would have found out by now.

I now assume the dash guage is not reading proper but am questioning why my multi meter shows the same battery voltage with or without the motor running.

Is this normal?

Thanks

Scott,

The battery will hold a surface charge for a while after the motor is off, best way to test: with motor off turn on lights for a few minutes then recheck voltage.

For the guage, sounds like a bad connection, check all the wiring and connections to the guage.

Hope this helps,

John

Thanks John. My real question is if the charging system is like that of a car, about 12V not running and about 14V when running.

Thanks again.

Fully charged battery should read 12.6v and you should get a reading of around 14v when engine is running and charging.
