I need a good bit of work done on my trailer ($1700+). I had somebody from the Trailer Doctor come out and check several issues with my trailer. This is the proposed work.

- Replace entire brake system (stopped working due to rust every where)
- Replace rusted axles
- Replace rusted leaf springs
- Replace bearings

If anybody has any previous experience (good and bad) with the Trailer Doctor please let me know. I couldn't find this company on the BBB to see what their history is. They asked for more than half of the cost upfront so I am a little cautious.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks!

That is a big bill for trailer repair.. and you still have a rebuilt trailer..what size boat? I have seen new aluminum double axle trailers for around $3500 with brakes online. Axles can be up to $300 a piece. Brake system $400 , springs ( 4 of them) $200 and bearing sets another $100.. that is close to $1300 in parts. They might have to replace hubs also when they get in there. I do not have any experience with the Trailer Doctor but the price they quoted seems very fair and reasonable. Best of luck

Fishgill, you're reading my mind. That's quite an investment to end up with a "repaired" trailer. 2 years ago I bought a tandem aluminum trailer (McClain), from Mike Gerald in Baton Rouge with brakes, 4 bunk drive on, guides, spare tire mounted, 2 speed winch, led lights, fancy wheels with radial tires & sized for a 4,000 lb. boat and it was only $4,500.

Fret Not, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!

Yes, the hubs are being replaced along with a cracked rotor. All of the parts are in much need of replacement. The boat is 20 ft in length and came with the boat when purchased in 2006.

One axle was starting to give way and causing a tire to wear unevenly.

Being in Mandeville you have another option, Sport Trail trailers in Bay St. Louis,Phone:(228) 467-1885, Kevin Deselle is the owner, and I have heard a lot of great things about him. I believe that he also repairs trailers. give him a call

ok thanks for the updated information, what I have seen in the past on boat trailer( original equipment) is normally undersized for the real load the boat is going to be carrying,( package deals) to sell boats...axle bend causing outer tire wear is the first sign of a underrated trailer. make sure you know how much your boats weights, plus fuel, plus engines, plus all the gear and ice and what ever else you can think of that adds weight onto the trailer. you could have been undersized from the very beginning. it would really not do you any good to replace with the same size axle if it is already bending under load..history has a tendency to repeat itself.
I have always bought my trailers separate from the boat just for that reason.. find a good trailer company ( many of them out there) and maybe purchase a new trailer. Remember trailer companies only sell trailers they will not sell you the wrong size and may suggest even a larger one than needed. Many trailers that are packaged with boats do not come with warranties ( just saying)

I WHOLE HEARTEDLY SECOND ED'S SUGGESTION...SPORT TRAIL TRAILER CO. Kevin built a CUSTOM all aluminum trailer (for 22-6 Avenger bay boat) with ONLY SS hardware, SS Kodiak brake system, all LED lighting, two guide pipes, teflon keel skids, custom welded to my specs spare tire holder, 3 custom step-down add-ons on front of trailer to climb from bow of boat to trailer-tongue and custom aluminum rims/fenders...rated at 9,000# capacity...ALL around $3K. His trailers AND SERVICE ARE SECOND TO NONE!!!! BRING HIM YOUR BOAT AND IT WILL BE CUSTOMIZED TO FIT YOUR HULL...John Castelluccio, Jr.

I agree with John C and ed. Check out Sport Trail. I have a 25` 6" Avenger and they put a nice aluminum trailer under it that is really nice and built for the load for about 3K.

Thanks for all of the info. I already dropped off the trailer for repairs yesterday. As ya'll pointed out the capacity issue, I was concerned about the capacity of the trailer too but the axle bending was most likely due to a very hard hit on a pot hole last year at high speed. The tire that hit the pot hole is the only one that is out of alignment and is the one with the cracked rotor. I didn't want to take chances so I am having both axles replaced.

The trailer is rated for 7000lbs and the boat weighs 4000lbs maxed out with fuel, all gear, trolling motor, batteries, etc..

I envy John C's trailer specs!! Unfortunately, I just had the roof on my home replaced so I couldn't go all the way with that kind of investment in getting a brand new trailer but now I know for next time.

Anytime...most of us here are giving advice from experience---trial and many, many errors before "getting it right"! There are a 'few' on this website who will grill you for advice many times over and then go behind you and continue asking the same question and getting the same original answer(s)!!! John C,

The work was completed by the Trailer Doctor last month. No complaints so far. The trailer almost feels like it is not there when I engage the brakes on the tow vehicle. Previously, I would feel the entire weight of the rig against the SUV and the need for much more stopping distance.

The only thing that will take time to confirm is if one of the tires on the previously rusted and warping axle has stopped wearing unevenly. The Trailer Doctor replaced both axles.

Visually, the work looks like it was done correctly and professionally.

What happened with the work done on your trailer?
