NICE DAY ON THE WATER… I had the pleasure of guiding good friends and customers Mr Dwight Johnston, his sons Father Matthew and Michael, and Father Cody Chatagnier on a recent trip. It’s always a special trip when this group gets together. With their busy schedules it doesn’t happen very often I must say, so it is greatly appreciated when everybody can get together and spend some time on the water. We fished around trying some areas that were improving with the warmer temperatures and caught some fish but it took some work. The fish were on the move from the wintering areas to the shallower waters of the marshes and lakes and weren’t very aggressive for some reason. We did manage a nice box of fish, mostly reds on this day which was a bonus. The time spent with family and great friends was what made the day for this group of guys though. Thanks again to Mr Dwight, Father Matthew, Michael, and Father Cody for making the trip happen. Can’t wait till next time! WE HAVE LOTS OF OPENINGS RIGHT NOW AND THE WEATHER IS WARMING UP SO COME ON DOWN AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EARLY SPRING CONDITIONS!   IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BOOK A TRIP WITH LAFITTE’S HARDEST WORKING, MOST PROFESSIONAL FISHING TEAM, GIVE US A CALL AT 504-689-2006 OR SEND AN EMAIL TO captainphil02@cox.net to GET YOUR CHARTER ON THE BOOKS. AWESOME WINTER FISHING CONTINUES… The fishing remains great for us here in Lafitte especially for redfish. The cold weather seems to be turning the hard-fighters on even more. I had the pleasure of guiding Mr Sam Ward and his buddy Mr Johnny from Arkansas a couple days ago. The reds were hungry and plentiful close to the marina and we boxed a nice limit pretty quick using fresh shrimp under popping corks. We rode around to scout some new water and found more fish which is a good thing, always nice to have options when conditions change. Many thanks again to Mr Sam and Mr Johnny for supporting our service and for a great day on the water spent with good folks. I look forward to seeing them and their friends in the future! WE HAVE OPENINGS DAILY RIGHT NOW INCLUDING THIS WEEKEND. THE WATERS ARE QUIET AND THE FISH ARE WAITING AND HUNGRY. FUN TRIP… Yesterday I had the opportunity to take my wife Rachel and our friend Angela Caruso fishing, something I really enjoy doing in spite of guiding for a number of years. The love of fishing is still there for me in a big way which is a blessing for sure. We left the dock at almost noon not knowing what to expect from the fish just wanting to catch enough for dinner. We found pretty water and mullet a short distance from Nick’s Marina and the redfish were there and hungry. We boxed 15 perfect eating-sized reds and released a bunch of big ones and small ones to boot. Three bonus puppy drum were added to the catch and were enjoyed greatly for supper last night. The action was non-stop and it was great to see the fish active and eating after some very cold weather this winter. DON’T LET THE COLD WEATHER SCARE YOU! THE FISH ARE STACKED UP AND WAITING FOR YOU DOWN HERE IN LAFITTE. WE HAVE BOATS OPEN TOMORROW AND FOR THE WEEKEND THIS WEEK AND LOTS OF OPENINGS FOR THE WEEKS TO COME. MORE GREAT TRIPS FOR REDS… This past Tuesday I had the pleasure of guiding the Maeshack brothers, first time customers from the Shreveport area. John, Janneh, Dennis, and Jonathan joined me for a day of fishing and found the redfish hungry and ready to bite. Things started a bit slow but as the day warmed things improved or maybe we just found them stacked up. Whatever the case, we completed a limit of nice reds around noon on Tuesday. We then tried a few spots for sheepshead and drum but found none of the striped fish that wanted to join the party. Nothing to complain about though, with the reds that were on ice. Also a bunch more were caught and released while looking for the bonus fish so lots of action on this day. On Wednesday, John and Janneh joined me for a second day of fishing. Unfortunately, Dennis and Jonathan had to return to work and were not able to stay and fish. The redfish were plentiful again on this day and it only took one stop to boat a 3 man limit. We were even more determined to find some bonus fish on day 2 but only managed to find one sheepshead and one bass to add to the box of redfish. A bunch more reds were released after our limit was reached so lots of fish catches were recorded on this trip as well. I want to thank all of the Maeshack brothers for day one and John and Janneh for day 2 of their trip, 2 great days on the water spent with good people. I  look forward to future trips with this crew! LOTS OF OPENINGS FOR JANUARY SO GIVE US A CALL TO GET YOUR TRIP ON THE BOOKS! REDFISH STILL BITING… On Thursday I had the pleasure of guiding good friend and customer Paul Collins and his daughter Calli from the Houston area, who had a swim meet in Baton Rouge this weekend. Paul had fished with a group a while back and showed Calli some pictures from the trip so she was excited about coming to fish with us.  She fishes a good bit back home and after a few instructions was casting the spinning reels with ease. Quite the competitor, Calli did a great job on the hard fighting redfish and she also landed the only sheepshead for the day, impressive for a young lady only eight years old. Paul and Calli enjoyed  some of the redfish and the sheepshead at Voleo’s for dinner after the charter, a great way to end the day. Thanks again to Paul and Calli for another great day on the water spent with good people. I look forward to their return! COLD WEATHER FISHING… Yesterday I had the pleasure of guiding first time customers from West Virginia, Mr. Jamisson and Will Ygland. The weather had been brutally cold since Sunday night and the water temperatures reflected that. When we left the dock at 10 am it registered 40 degrees on my depth finder and reached about 42 in the afternoon. The redfish had gone deep as we expected and were bunched up when we finally found them. We put 15 nice ones in the box and played catch and release for a while before calling it a day around 3:30 in the afternoon. Dead shrimp on jigheads and H&H soft plastics worked well. The fish had baitfish in their bellies which is encouraging, meaning they are eating and finding food in spite of the cold weather.  Thanks again to the Yglands for a great day on the water spent with nice folks. We look forward to their return! WE HAVE LOTS OF OPENINGS RIGHT NOW AND THE COLD WEATHER HAS NOT SLOWED THE FISH DOWN SO GIVE US A CALL TO GET YOUR TRIP ON THE BOOKS! NEW FRIENDS… I had the pleasure of guiding a very nice couple from Maryland on a recent trip. Chuck and Suzanne Linton joined me for 3 days of fishing and had a great trip. The weather forecast wasn’t great but we were blessed with nice conditions. The Lintons were prepared with foul weather gear but thankfully we only needed it briefly on day 1. The fishing was excellent, especially for redfish on these days but a few bonus fish were brought to the cleaning tables as well. The Lintons fish a lot back home and it was evident on the boat. Mr Chuck guides for striped bass on the Chesapeake and “knew the drill” which always helps.  All in all it was 3 great days on the water spent with new friends and all on board had a great time. We look forward to their return along with more new friends from their area! Thanks again to Chuck and Suzanne for giving our service a try and supporting us! BRAVING THE COLD… Yesterday Capt Beau Weber and myself had the pleasure of guiding 2 boats for good friend and customer Andrea Caplan who brought along her kids Monk and Jack and 3 friends from California. The guys were thinking about a swamp tour but decided to do a fishing trip instead and we are glad of that. It was pretty brutal out there on the water with chilly temps, stiff winds out of the north, and drizzle falling. The gang toughed it out and brought a nice bunch of redfish to the cleaning table to be enjoyed over the next few days. Fresh shrimp under popping corks did the job on the reds. Many thanks to Andrea, Monk, Jack, and the California gang for a good time on the water spent with good friends. We look forward to their return! WE HAVE LOTS OF OPENINGS RIGHT NOW AND ARE HAPPY TO TAKE CARE OF ANY YOUR GUIDING NEEDS. REDFISH HEAVEN The cold weather that invaded our area last week and over the weekend turned on the reds big time. The low tides had the bruisers out of the shallow marsh and stacked up close to deep water. The fish will return to the marshes when the weather moderates. This past Saturday and Sunday I had the pleasure of guiding good friend and customer Mike Neubauer and his friends Rob, Mark, and Rob. The guys traveled from Atlanta and South Carolina to Lafitte to fish. It took a while to find the fish on day 1 as we were dealing with the coldest water and lowest tides of the season by far. We knew the reds were piled up somewhere in deeper water but hadn’t dealt with this scenario thus far this year. Finally around lunch time we hit paydirt and the limit was reached not long after. Day 2 was an easy one as we built on what was learned on the first day. The limit was reached earlier and we were fortunate to release a bunch more good redfish to boot while fishing for sheepshead and drum. Fresh shrimp suspended under corks and on the bottom was the ticket for the hungry reds! Many thanks again to Mike, Rob, Mark, and Rob for 2 great days on the water spent with good friends. I look forward to their return! WE HAVE LOTS OF OPENINGS FOR FISHING THIS MONTH! OPENINGS FOR DECEMBER! The weather has finally gotten more seasonal down here in Lafitte. It actually feels like it should for December. Cold weather turns the redfish on and makes them even more hungry. The trout fishing should improve as well since the shrimp will move out with the colder water temps. The silver wonders will be found more stacked up where clear water and some bait is present. They will be easier to catch with less food swimming around. Capt Beau Weber and myself had the pleasure of guiding a good group of guys from Mississippi on a recent trip. Mr Jerry Horne brought along his son and 4 other friends, mostly law enforcement buddies, to do some fishing. It turned out to be a redfish day as the hard fighters were biting well for us. The trout were scattered on this day but both boats scraped up a mess to go along with limits of nice reds. Thanks again to Mr Jerry and all on the trip for a great day on the water spent with good people. We look forward to their return! I had the pleasure of guiding my good friends Dwight and Mary Johnston and Ben and Barbara Brown this past Monday. On this day the trout were the more willing participants. The crew put a nice limit of trout on ice and a couple reds to fill the box making a great catch. Thanks so much again to the Johnstons and the Browns for a fun day on the water spent with good friends. Can’t wait till next time! On Both days fresh shrimp and H&H Beetles and Capt Lane’s Ghost Minnows under popping corks did the damage on the fish. Bayou Bievenue Bass on fire!

We have been fishing Bayou Bievenue for the last few weeks. The bass have been going wild. We made 3 trips and slaughtered the bass each time. I have been fishing with my son. We have been catching over 100 bass per trip. We do keep our limit only. I attached a picture of our catch from Thursday and Sunday. Yellow Spinner Baits have been killer. we have been catching the fish on a outgoing tide.  The harder the wind the better they seem to bite!  Fish any place with openings in the grass. I had never fished this area before for Bass.

Fresh water Intel

TEAM JO-JO:

Big Don (aka Capt Don) called gave me some options for fishing, Bass off ICW, Sacalait in Bar Pits off Hwy 11, or his top secrete spot. Me think we both have been having a yearning to fish the bar pits, so that won the draw for our fun day on the water.

SIGNS:

  • No fishing over the weekend, that be a sign
  • Had a great Sunday dinner red gravy & meatballs, brother from Tennessee in with some of his clan, had neighbor over, and Daughterofthepack and her clan, all total (13) for a impromptu visit and dinner, this was one of those moments you could not duplicate, even if you tired.
  • Monday off the water
  • Got the call from Big Don, yessum says me ready to go, meet up at our abode for 5:45 AM
  • Early to bed , early to rise
  • Hooked up the Bay Flat Jr, all gear already in her, Big Don drives up loaded up his gear, me think we almost needed another boat for his gear.
  • No wild life sightings on Hwy 11 bridge
  • No boast fishing along trestles, looked a little rough and dirty
  • Made it to launch on Hwy 11, no boats in parking lot, told Big Don me no see any boats there for a while when me pass by many times, this be a sign for sure.
  • Launch the Bay Flat Jr, one pull on eh Yamaha Nightmare Machine that’s all, now that is a sign
  • Down we run the bayou at almost top speed, get down 2 -3 block growth in bayou, not look bad so we continue
  • Growth turns in to full blown football field of plant life.
  • Also notice that water looks worst then river water, must be from all that sand they pumped in from the lake P.
  • On to plan “B”

CONDITIONS:

  • Perfect
  • S.E. wind 15-20 mph, steady it be
  • Some clouds, mostly sunny & clear
  • Mild temps
  • Water level up
  • Water temp 68 – 70F
  • Water clarity on a scale of 1-7:
    • Bar Pit 1 plus, real bad in canal before bar pit
    • Bar Pit canal to Hwy I-10 3 plus
    • Carr canal 2 plus
    • Seems me cannot get away from the dirty water
  • Tide, don’t think we had any at Bar Pit, but water was pouring into canal out of the marsh, and at Carr drive it looked to be coming in, because the Bay Flat Jr was standing still wind gong one way water the other.
  • We had all areas to ourselves, not other boats out and bout
  • Saw one boat in Lake P trolling as we was going from plan “A” to plan “B”.

TECHNIQUE / STRATEGY:

  • Be safe
  • Have fun
  • Put some run time on Bay Flat Jr. and Yamaha Nightmare Machine
  • This be me daily therapy for ALL me aliments
  • Gather Intel for future trips, and to share with fisherperson, (on rodnreel.com) to help assist them in their choice of areas to fish, lures to use and presentation of same to the elusive Sacalait & Bass.
  • Calm the desire to fish the Bar Pits for a while to come.
  • Big Don wanted to fish canal along Hwy 11, mw mention me would like to fish Carr Drive but no place to launch, you want to fish their says he, yessum says me, let’s go says he, he knew of a nice back down launch to launch us.
  • Next outing we will try canal that runs parallel to Hwy 11, but me think that will be dirty too.
  • Find a spot # with the seven fundamentals / criteria of catching:

  • WIND AT YOUR BACK: (Wind diffidently at our back, we used it to push us along the bayou as we fished the shoreline, it would have been too windy to anchor up and cast & retrieve.)

  • MOVING WATER: (WE think we had some in Carr canal, we could see what looked like a current line, but we not sure wind blowing too hard to make it out.)

  • WATER CALRITY: (Challenge of the day, me think it is following me around, but me know one day me will find clean water to fish & catch)

  • HOLDING FISH: (Shore line of Carr canal, all fish caught their)

  • PATIENTS: (None needed, with plan “A” going down the tubes, and plan “B” up next there was no time to get bored, through in a few fish and it made our day)

  • SKILL: (Had to resurrect me fresh water fishing skills, worm fishing, have not done that in a while, but like riding a bike, you don’t forget.)

  • LUCK: (Luck was with us today, did not get wet, only a little dry sprinkle here and there, and additional luck was that Big Don left his worm pole in the truck)
  • Anchor up cast & retrieve slowly along the bottom, with a twitch every now and then, tight lining…………………………………ALL FISH CUAGHT DRIFTING ALONG THE SHROE LINE CASTING AND RETIREIVING.

All of this info / Intel to say he not fisherperson of the day, notice me did not say excuses, because he say he had none. He had to bring up the past, ask he did you hear what happen to Big Bud (aka Eastofmrgo)….No says me what happen, (this after me already lost two fishing partners in a short period of time) says he got inducted into the fisherperson of the day hall of fame, cause every time he goes with you (Oneofthepack) he out fishes you and he be fisherperson of the day……Not today me said.

SUGGESTIONS:

Fine clean water, and when you do let me / us know. Silverwodners have to turn on by mid-March, thy just have to, so be ready.

PONDER OF THE DAY:

Nature is never finished.

O & A:

What is the biggest waste of fisherpersons potential?

FUTURE TEAM JO-JO’S next foray AGENDA:

Delacroix, Delacroix, Delacroix, and me going to need some first mates to help bring in the Silverwodners, stay tune, until then: Good Fishing Team Jo-Jo & Oneofthepack

Sweetwater Marina

Quick report from here at Sweetwater. The fishing seems to be pretty steady on the speckled trout for the guys that know how to fish Delacroix. In fact, some of them have been catching limits. The guys that don't know much about Delacroix seem to be catching at least a dozen or so trout, with some reds, black drum and bass. Some people have been catching plenty of sheephead. The wind is making it tough. However, at least we are getting some warm weather. Its not miserably cold anymore. We have plenty of live shrimp for those that want to fish with live bait. If you don't launch here at Sweetwater, of course we will still sell you live bait. If you get a chance and want to come fishing, watch the weather and head down. The hotspots seems to be Lake Amadee, Lake John area, FourHorse, Lake Campo and even heard a few other spots. With the river water seeping through certain areas, you have to find a clear pocket of water, which is where the fish are usually piled up. As far as the redfishing guys that have been practicing, they have been giving some decent reports here and there. We know how that goes with redfishing guys though. They may or may not be telling the truth. If you can make it down, come on down. There is no better place to fish than in the east and Saint Bernard parish marshes. It's one of the last places left that still have inland bays, inland lakes, and inland bayous that you can target redfish and speckled trout in. Other spots are washed wide open. We can't wait to see you here at Sweetwater Marina! Remember we do have non-ethanol fuel, ice, tackle, live bait, dead bait, maps, gps chips, bugspray, sunscreen, drinks, snacks, oil and anything you might need for a great day on the water. We also offer A+ service! We will launch your boat for you, park your vehicle, give you golf court rides to and from your vehicle, point you to all the hotspots and anything else you may need help with! If you are interested in booking lodging or charters, please call 504-342-2368! Charters- are $750 for up to 4 anglers! The captain provides everything! The only thing you need to bring is lunch and drinks for yourselves, something to bring your cleaned and packaged fish home in and a fishing license! If you don't have a Louisiana fishing license, you will need to get a 3 day charter license! For more info call the number above! Lodging-we have units that sleep up to 6 people and are $160.50 per night! They are in the best location in Delacroix! Right across from the Marina! You can leave your boat in the water! Launches are free! Linens, towels, rags, silverware, plates, bowls and cups are all in the room! There is a coffee pot (with everything needed to make the coffee), griddle, fridge, freezer, sink and charcoal grills outside of each room! The bedroom contains 2 bunk beds with full bottom and twin top! In the living room area, there are two sofas (one's a sofa sleeper) and a television with cable! And a full size bathroom! There is wifi available! So..don't pass up on the opportunity to stay in our convenient, comfy lodge. We do now offer two bedroom lodging with a full kitchen. They are set up a little bit differently. They are a bit more spacious. Call with any questions or to reserve your dates!!!
