Tuesday surprise

9854453553
Got a call from Don (PerchWhisperer ) for a trip some city fishin. Met at 5:30am at Harrison (much easier launch and recover than at Filmore) , 8’ pelican already loaded and off we went. Made all the same bulkheads and docks that fished last time and more . Nice a north breeze and clouds made for pleasant fishing. Held my own for the most part, but Don had a tough time dealing with my mumbling and lousy vision that kept him at an disadvantage in the concentration department . Used a black grub with and without a spinner to put 30 nice perch in the box. Finished about noon. Thanks Don for a day of distraction from the Thursday surgery, hope to be back at it soon and some meanful conversational, lol.

URBAN FISHIN

Met Perch Whisperer in NOLA at 6am at Filmore and Wisner for a day of city fishing . Got the 8’ Pelican launched and loaded (still amazed how stable a fishing platform this plastic boat is). Cranked the TM on and across the byu we went, worked every dock and bulkhead from start to I- 610. We tried the grass side of the byu, but the civilized side worked better by far, Don had his GAME ON as usual but once I got the casting down back in the water ( docks, lawns, trees ,5 feet from the boat etc.)I held my own . The challenge of the day for me today was the use of a live well hanging over the side so we could cull the catch (avoid the WHAT DID WE KEEP THAT ONE FOR) .Only having 1 useful eye , chunkin a pissed off perch in a 8” hole and having it stay captured was more of a challenge than catching them. Finally started using the ice chest after 5 or so nice size ones made a great escape. Small black grub on 1/32 oz jig head did all the damage and produced a great Bite And Fight to satisfy the need, and a easy trip with a good friend ended my day about noon. All ways hear the “Adventures of Perch Whisperer” and his city fishin NOW I KNOW and I like it . Not much detail air temp warm to hot, clarity good, light wind from the east. No fishing pressure . Finished with 53 perch Along with all my other broke stuff I added a camera to the list.

tuesday 7-10

Finally made a plan and followed thru on it, kinda. Missed a trip with oneofthepack and perch whisper due to an inability to clear the calendar for Tuesday 7-10 in time. Finally Monday, decided to go to the rigs and Biloxi  marsh with wife to look for some specks and Reds on Tuesday. Before the day was out wife cancelled because of a surprise dr appt, so Solo it would be. Launch at Vinot’s and uneventful ride to about 2 miles into Lake Borgne when the motor voluntarily slowed to 1500 rpm. Many years ago this happened and the sensor in the oil tank was bad . 1.5 hours ( 7mph) later back at the launch and headed to Dockside in Bogalusa, Brent said may be oil or over heat problem. Still trying to plan a trip to the marsh “to be continued”. Perfect conditions, cool, 75deg, water temp 84, tide up and incoming and clear as I have seen it in awhile, light NE breeze.

Better late than never

Had to make myself scarce for a few hours for wife’s ladies meeting . Not so sure a noon start for a fishing trip was wise, BUT, that was the decision. Quick launch at VINOT’S and off to Lake Catherine to chase some reds. Cloudy skies and wind stronger than I thought it would be ,made for a fairly comfortable air temp , only sweated A LOT, as apposed to PROFUSELY. Wind out the east 10-15 gave me some lee shore opportunities in Bay Jaune. Second cast with a gold spoon and a 16” red in the box. Many cast later still only 1 red. Made a move to grand coin pocket and way to much grass for pleasant fishing. Made a run across lake Catherine to some broken marsh down towards unknown pass and managed 2 more 16” reds on a GOT-CHA curl tail Grub with a 1/8 jig head on a # three spinner blade. Another try in a big pond off unknown and gave up because of the grass. Fished from 1:30 till 4:30. Wind was a surprise, and fishing in grass and dealing with a trolling motor is a chore. Water level was up to normal and incoming all the time I fished, clarity was good ,12-18 visibility. Water temp 86.

The heat is on.

5AM meet up at fort Pike , calm ride across Lake Catherine to some broken marsh and canals along the ICW , had me and Capt. Don (Perch Whisperer), chunkin for whatever would hit. As usual Capt. Don had a nice green trout in the boat before I could get rigged up and fishing. The tide was pretty low but the water was incoming so we hoped for the rising tide to open opportunities as the day went on, my boat would have been aground as soon as we left the canals, but the FLAT with the 90 YAMMY got us wherever we needed to get to fish every point and pocket in sight. The grass was tough to fish due to the shallow water, but, the technique of reeling as soon as the GOT-CHA curl tail Grub with a 1/8 jig head on a # three spinner blade rig hit the water ,kept the grass at a minimum, ( not really, miserable crap was unavoidable) .Didn’t stop Don from adding to the box but for me ,lets just say ,glad no ladies or kids were present. Fighting Reds and Green trout in the shallow water has no comparison, even the reds were flying high. As much as I hate to admit it the body just can’t handle the all day fishing (can’t see to can’t see) of the past, so when Capt. Don said “Time to go” there was no argument from the back seat. Fairly clear sky no wind and lots of heat took it’s toll, quick smooth ride back to the Fort about 11am ended the trip. Lots of fish in the marsh, with a little more water and help from ME would have made the tailgate shot even better, BUT always fun when I get a chance to fish with the Perch Whisperer. Most fish caught on the GOT-CHA, smoke with chartreuse tail , one red on a Gold spoon, trying to avoid the grass mat, was all . Low tide , incoming as the day wore on, water temp 80deg to start, fairly clean. No wind and bright sunshine. Finished the trip at 11am with 7 Reds 16-24” 6 Green Trout about 12”

Save a Perch, catch a Red 5-30-18

Needing to run my boat, I suggested Perch Whisperer join me for a salt water adventure. Complaints from friends flying that if Capt Don don’t quit perching, ‘Won’t be any for anybody else”. Met at 5:30 at Fort Pike , quick launch and boat ride thru Unknown Pass, (barely made it under the trestle), to some broken marsh and canals off the ICW. First trip to the Rigolets area in awhile, we weren’t sure what we would find as far as fish, water clarity and grass beds, heard rumors most of the lagoons and canals were choked with grass, not a problem. I started with a lemonhead matrix on a ¼ oz head, but the ball of grass that accumulated in about 2 seconds had me changing to a lure Capt. Don gave me last fall (see pic) he gets them on line by the hundreds. Capt Don started with a top water. As soon as the lure lands start the retrieve and the spinner will keep the lure just under the surface to avoid the grass , (called waking I think). Worked great till I had to stop reeling to adjust the TM then BAM snot grass ball mama. OH YEAH, TM is not weed less . Started the pockets and points routine and fairly quick a 12” green trout is in the box, short stretch later BAM another 12” green thing hit’s the ice. Whisperer seemed to be in a slump. When Capt Don gets quiet, the “how is he catchin and I’m not” gears are turning. The next fish in the box is a nice 24” red, my comment on Capt Don’s quality netting ability and my offer to let him fish from the front of the boat, ended the QUIET concentration . LMAO, the man was talking (out loud) to fish, lures , rod and reels and his thoughts on fishing from the front or back of the boat. The drought ended (WHEW ) with a nice 14” Green trout then back to back reds, all from the back of the boat. We continued the quest for a few more hours before the heat and my back got me. Ended the trip about 1 or so. Great day even if the catching was not a slam, fishing with friends is great whether the catching is slow or a slam. Started with a breeze 5-10 from the west, and a falling tide, some time during the day the tide changed to incoming (as noted at the trestle) and the wind quit and the clouds disappeared. Water temp 80-85, clarity 12-18”+ where I didn‘t hit bottom with the TM , 22‘ BB not the perfect tool for fishing the area chose. Box count, 6 reds 16 to 24“ 2 throw back reds 6 green trout 12-14“ Lots of acrobats to throw the hooks.

So much for a plan

Early Wednesday I got permission from the entertainment director for me to try the Biloxi marsh Thursday before the specks evacuate the area till September. Checked weather, good, checked tide,( no I didn’t, just deal with whatever I get) good. Boat got oil, get gas and Ice in the morning. This is where things went bad, with all day to do the final preps I strayed from the routine and found other stuff to do, plant trees from arbor day foundation, plant rose bushes for wife fix bad spots in living room ceiling, to make a long story shorter, it got dark and I didn’t even feel like fishing . Woke up late 7am, piddled around finishing the go fishing duties about 8 or so. Finally got on the road at 10:30 and at Roy Vinot’s new marina at the Rigolets for 11, spent about an hour rehashing our childhood and finally headed for the trestle at hwy 11, to late for a trip across lake Borgne. Weather conditions were perfect, light wind, light incoming tide and BAM, clean water (visibility easy 2+ feet from at least MM174 north). Only a couple of boats at fire break 6 so I started at 5 and second cast with a purple beetle on a round white head and a nice 15” speck in the box. Started moving north without a nibble till I switched to the east side of the bridge, bam speck in the box, Never found a pattern but managed 2 more specks and 2 flounders(1 made it back in the lake) Quit about 4 and took a ride back in lakeshore for a few cast ,but no takers. Not bad, got to run the boat, first time since the day after Christmas, caught fish, ran across (,not literally) WET PANTS GUY in the red rocket, enjoyed some “how ya beens”, and got home without breaking anything. Finished with 4 specks 12-15” 1 13” flounder ( had to keep for wife’s friend ) 1 6” flounder released.

Tuesday 3-13

Met Perch Whisperer at Carr dr. for a bass expedition in his 8’ Pelican. Quick launch at his friends back down . Still can’t believe this boat floats with 400+ lbs of fishermen, and another 100 lbs of stuff(trolling motor, batt, ice chest , tackle box etc. Unbelievably stable. Water was really dirty so my expectations were not reel high. Made our way up and down the canal fishing grass lines and boat docks and only managed 2 bass( Capt. Don) . Excitement level went Sky high when I caught a CHARLIE HORSE in my leg and had to jump up, straighten out the leg and bend over to stretch the muscle and relive the pain, try that in a already jammed packed 8’ plastic boat. Pretty sure Capt. Don spent the rest of the adventure praying for CHARLIE not to show up again. Seemed like we fished closer to shore after that. Decided to relocate to his favorite private pond(lake ) of a relative, and managed to box 6 nice Green things and catch and release a 4.17 pounder. Tried a new bait, TRD (yep called the turd) on 1/10 oz jig head. I used one called _____, kinda purple looking, and Don had a copper and chartruse one till we tangled lines and a backlash shut him down. He changed to one that looked like nutria turd and did well on that one also. As usual a trip with Perch Whisperer was a fun adventure. Cold to start38 deg. Better as the day went on (stopped fishing about 2). Water dirty in Carr dr. and clean in the pond. Windy most of the morning and not bad later. 6 bass 12-15” 1 4.17 lb released Got more pics but camera won’t turn um loose.

Cold and Cloudy

Two weeks in the planning, trying to work around Family commitments and the weather. Finally decided on today, 12-26-17, chose to fish this side of Lake Borgne to avoid the lousy wind forecast all week. Quick launch at Southside at the Chef about 8:30am , 50 live shrimp, YEP, LIVE SHRIMP, figured I would need all the help I could get to make Joseph(nephew) and Georges( Joseph’s Dad from Texas ) , day a catching day instead of a fishing day. Headed for the WALL and started chunkin live shrimp on ¼ oz round white head, I used lemonhead on ¼ oz head to give them the most opportunities to catch, I am terrible at live bait fishing, I lose more than I catch on. First stop at the corner where the wall and sheet piles meet, only took a few cast to start catching with the shrimp, only caught maybe 6 on plastic. Every time I called ONE MORE CAST , the Samford gang connected. A few boats showed up and cut my movement to a 50 foot span so when the bite slowed we headed for the Michoud slip where we boxed a speck and returned 2 puppy drum to grow to legal size. Light rain and my cold body put and end to the day at 2:07pm . Wind NE at 10-15 and cold. Tide incoming all day, Clarity OK, water temp 51 all day. Had a great time fishing with new to salt fishermen. Ended with: 22 specks 12-15” 1 white 11” 2 drum 15” returned to the cold depths.
