Couldn’t resist 75 degree weather Saturday so when I got a call from one of my fishing partners we met up at the camp and rolled out at 6:00 a.m. Headed to Jefferson Lake canal and fished a pond that was draining to the canal. Picked at them until the wind started and the tide stopped around 8:00 and wound up with 30 trout. Went to a cut in Wilkerson bayou and went through bunches of small reds to catch 4 nice reds. Also went hunting in my back yard last night and got 2 nice possums. My crazy chiwennie dog cornered them and they were starting to get the best of him so I had to put them to sleep with my trusty 177 cal. pellet gun. Awesome firepower. Dog had a small bite cut on foot but good to go. My grand daughter got in the act with her pink BB gun. No Christmas for those possums. Caught all the trout on chartreuse beetles under a cork and reds on top and bottom with shrimp. Good weekend for us and bad weekend for fish and possums.

Happy election day everybody. Just a quick report for Saturday morning. Pattern holding the same with trout being caught early at the mouth of Bayou Wilkinson but I hear they are in Grand Bayou and shores of Bay Laurier also. Also caught a few reds with trout caught on chartreuse beetles under a cork. When the shrimp go down and the skimmers pick up and shut down the bite is pretty much over. Two of us wound up with 28 trout and 3 reds and made it back for breakfast. Warm enough where I pulled the kids on the tube so they got their last tube ride for the year hopefully. Kids fishing off the bank rodeo this weekend in the Myrtle Grove neighborhood so that will be my weekend. Remember vote early and vote often. Ha

Made a Saturday morning trip with my nephew. Small crew at the Sunshine camp this weekend so we got to bed around 11:30 which is early for us. Hit the bay around daybreak to a beautiful sunrise and a nice warm day. Gotta love it down here when you can fish in shorts and flip flops and it’s almost November. We fished the mouth of Wilkerson Bayou and picked up 25 trout, one flounder and a drum before the tide stopped. It was an early bite and around 9:00 the fish got lockjaw and we had things to do so it worked out good. Caught everything on chartreuse beetles under a cork. Bride wanted to hit the Quarter Sunday to eat and watch the game at a bar and that was fine with me. Free shots for everybody when the saints scored a touchdown at the 801 Bar on Royal. Glad it wasn’t a high scoring game. Good weekend with easy trips before the trout scatter inside the marsh and the hootchie mamas scatter in the Quarter. Real nice scenery out there. I think as long as it stays warm this pattern is going to hold for a while.

Thought I would post this picture of 2 fine upstanding fisherman from 1974 at 18 years old. The guy with me is my fishing partner Lil Mike. We just came back from sleeping overnight at Eddies Pass in Empire and we are still fishing and sharing a camp together. My mom hated my hair and our smell after 2 days fishing. I remember that after we cleaned up we picked up the hootchie mamas and headed to Fat City all night. Good times.

Headed down to the Sunshine camp to do a little work. Got up around 7:00 and the girls said they they wanted fry some fish this afternoon. The wind was blowing around 25 so we told them to get their stuff together and see what we can do. Hit Bayou Wilkerson and found a few birds hitting shrimp so we made a few casts and after culling through a bunch of small trout we wound up with 15 keepers. Enough for lunch so we headed back to the camp. Sunday was nice with little wind and we usually don’t fish two days in a row but we weren’t running far so got up at 8:00 and got 20 more. The grand kids were down so we headed back to get the grill going. Beautiful weekend with plenty boats out Sunday. The people who went early did good and the bite died off around 10:00. Caught everything on popcorn beetles in chartreuse and white glow under a cork. The fish are all up front now so we don’t need to run 30 miles before we wet a line. So summers over and the hootchie mamas are covering up now and I have to put long pants on and a long sleeve shirt but I’m not giving up on my flip flops dammit. Can you tell I like Summer? Got my grandaughter helping clean fish in this picture now if she could fry them too and clean the boat that would be great but she said that’s going to come at a price.

Had the first annual Fishing for the Girls Rodeo in Myrtle Grove this weekend. Windy as hell out there but we did manage to catch 15 keeper trout and 6 redfish. The trout are pretty much up front now. Had a friend brave crossing the bay but came up empty at our summer spots. He caught his trout up front on live shrimp under a cork and we caught our fish on beetles under a cork. All the fish we caught this weekend were from Wilkerson Bayou mouth and up. Raised a lot of money for a good cause and a good time with friends and neighbors in Myrtle Grove. Had a packed house at the camp and that’s how we like it. We also had a first place flounder by me and second place trout by Rachel in my boat. Also it was the only flounder entered so first wasn’t too hard to come by.

Only had three of us, me my camp partner Lil Mike and his wife Bonnie at the camp Saturday so we shut down around midnight which is early for us. Pulled up to our first spot around 7:45 and started putting trout in the boat. Called over the other boat fishing with us and they did good too. That’s what’s good about fishing two or more boats. You can cover more ground but The fish were fighting back today. Wasn’t fast but it was steady until a trout fell off the hook and the barb went deep in Lil Mikes hand. Told him I had been waiting to try out the fishing line hook removal trick and now I had the perfect Guinea pig. He wasn’t too excited but with no other options he agreed. Wrapped the string around it, pushed down on the head and out it came. Headed to the inside for some reds when the trout bite died. Now it was my turn when a catfish fell off my hook and the son of a bitch landed straight up in the top of my foot down to the bone. Pulled him out and Bonnie said is that blood shooting out your foot. Well that barb hit an artery or vein or something because that juice was shooting 6 inches out and it looked like a crime scene on the front of the boat so I washed my foot off in the water, put a band aid on it, grabbed a miller lite and caught a red after the pain went down a little. We all survived and wound up with 64 trout and a few reds. Had a few nice white trout mixed in. It’s nice fishing this time of the year. Not many boats around because of hunting and football going on and that’s fine with me. Caught all the trout in Bay long on chartreuse and glow white beetles under a cork so the trout are still outside. Really pretty day on the water and as soon as I get a chance I’m going to let those fish know it’s fall and time to move in some.

Those fish didn’t know what hit em this Saturday. My camp partner and I had a rare chance to fish together with just us two. His daughter who is my god child and his son in law fished in another boat with their friends. They said they were going to stay on our ass today because they never catch fish by themselves. By the time they got up, took showers, turned back to get their smokes we hit the canal around 7:00 a.m. but no big deal. Getting to bed around 1:30 a.m. didn’t help. Made the turn into Bay Laurier to a beautiful sunrise and slick calm water. Gave the Suzuki a little sugar and made our first stop at the mouth of Bayou Wilkerson. Half hour later we had 28 trout in the boat and the other crew even caught some so they were already happy campers. Tried a few spots on the way to Bay Long and picked up a few here and there and we both had a few nice reds on the shore even though there was oil boom laid out. Gave me flashbacks to B.P. spill. Why is every dam oil spill ground zero where I fish. Anyway we hit a sunken island in Billet Bay and got back on the trout. We finished up our limit and called the other boat and they wound up with a nice mess also. Caught everything on chartreuse beetles under a popping cork and shrimp for the reds. The trout weren’t big but there were plenty of em. Others I talked to caught some nice trout around the camps on live shrimp. Was a beautiful day and fun trip with the crew.

Hot, calm, no clouds, and no tide Saturday but we still managed to catch a few fish for the Hermitage fire department rodeo. We had 15 trout, two drum and two reds and and my camp partner wound up with 32 trout, two reds and a .24 ounce croaker that won 2nd place in that division. Embarassing but still a winner. They also won 2nd place for trout, red and gaftop cat so they did pretty good for the rodeo. Two nights in a row of rodeo festivities and running back around midnight back to myrtle grove by boat with a boat following me and my spotlight broken was fun but we made it with no problems with the hootchie mamas and kids all in one piece. Saturday was the hottest we’ve seen all summer but it was a good fun weekend with Sunday cooling off with the rain. Fish are starting to move to the front already. We caught some fish around the mines and mouth of Wilkerson bayou on beetles under a cork. Any more than 3 days of this I think it would have killed me so 4 days to recuperate and back at it.

Got up Saturday morning and checked the radar on the phone and it didn’t look good. Sat around the camp and ate a little breakfast and saw a window of opportunity. We don’t really watch the weather we just wake up and plan our trip then. We ran to our regular summer spots around Four Bayou and Bay Long. Weather wasn’t bad and we picked up a few specks close to the gulf and some reds on the shore. Phone service isn’t too good out there and was wondering where my nephews were because I let them take my boat. They know what they are doing because I taught them everything I know which isn’t necessarily a good thing. By the time we got through on the phone they just about had their limit at the gulf in Bay Long on the falling tide. Nothing big but keepers. Fishing in my boat and catching more than me. Ah yes grasshopper I taught you well. We had 21 trout and 7 reds and they had 71 trout all caught on chartreuse beetles under a popping cork and the reds on same with shrimp. Also did battle with a few bull reds. Nice day and got rough on the way in but we beat the rain. Did a little partying at the bus canal rodeo with the girls that afternoon and shut it down around midnight Saturday after running back to Myrtle Grove from Lafitte. Four more days until next weekend. Can’t wait.
