They’re back!

We’ve been trying our spot in Lake Catherine for the last month without getting a bite.  Finally  Sunday morning we went armed with 100 live shrimp from Rigolets Marina . We started drifting  our favorite cove and after about 10 minutes we got a bite and dropped the Talon. It was pretty much every cast after that with a lot of nice sized fish and very few throwbacks. The only bad part was some aggravating needlefish. But we stuck with it and had 48 trout by 9:30. We stopped at 48 because we were not sure if we had miscounted when it got a little hectic. We actually left them biting after we picked up the Talon and drifted a few more yards to the East. Great day on the water with my son , beautiful weather with just enough wind to drift with and we are happy  that the fall fishing is taking off and the trout are back in Lake Catherine!

Vets day trout

We decided to participate in the “WE HEART VETS” rodeo at the Dock on Sat. Got 100 shrimp and headed for Lake Catherine (again). We tried a point then headed to Bay Jaune where we caught them last week.  First cast we got a big one so we stuck the Talon and got on a pretty good bite with some really nice sized trout, think we measured 2 fish . I thought we would place in the rodeo for sure but we barely missed 3rd place .  Oh well. Several of our fish were 1 1/2 – 2 lbs. Largest was 2.4 lbs.  We started around 7:15 and finished at 10:00 with 22 nice trout and headed in to watch LSU kick butt. At 2:30 we went to the weigh-in at the dock to hang out for a while with the Vets and weighed 3 fish…all over 2 lbs but none made the board. It was a good feeling to support the Vets and was a good day fishing too. As long as I can catch 20 or 30 in my back yard I will be postponing the Delacroix trips for a while. I do think I hear Pointe Fienne calling though…..killed them in there last few years!  Thank you to all Vets out there in cyber-land! ( Can somebody out there tell me exactly how to post pictures directly from my phone?)

Trout retreat

My 8th grader at PJP was off due to a teacher retreat so I took off  too….looks like a fishing trip to me!  Boat was already in water behind house (Eden Isles) so instead of the normal Delacroix trip at this time of year we went to Lake Catherine armed with live shrimp. First stop we caught a couple but the gnats were killing us so we left and headed towards the south shore of the lake. Next stop nothing, then we drifted a cove and caught about a dozen….it slowed so we headed to Bay Juane and got on a good bite. We had 31 in the boat and somebody got antsy and wanted to go try the trestles. So we left fish to find fish (mistake) and caught one more trout and headed in with 32. Didn’t have to measure most, and a couple of 2-3 pounders. Nice fish on a beautiful day.

Drifting Lake Catherine

Left at the crack of 8:30 to get some live shrimp from Rigolets and headed to Lake Catherine.  Tried several spots with no bites….then while I was drifting a cove I started getting bit so I put the Talon down and never had   to move again. It was pretty much every cast with very few throwbacks and a few really nice ones.  Left em biting with a great catch on a beautiful day!

Birthday trout

Played hookey from work today for my birthday (just like a kid) and made a short run over to the car bridge by Rigolets armed with live shrimp. Managed to pick through small trout and catfish to wind up with 18 keepers.  I fished about 3 spots between the pilings and finished up around 10:30.  Pretty good day out on the water by myself….beats work that’s for sure!  ( one day I will learn to post pictures)

Lake Catherine Specks

Tuesday morning I was the first one at the trestles in the dark and started by the North end with live shrimp near the bridge and by FB 4 . Then went down to Marker 175 and after 5 gaftops I headed to Lake Catherine….Good move .  By 10:00 I had 22 nice trout, very few throwbacks, and out of the 22 about 12 of them were really big, maybe 2 -2 1/2 lbs.

22 ytrout

Late report from Lake Catherine….went to same spot as before by  Unknown Pass and managed to catch 22 nice trout using live shrimp and the old shad rig on Monday.  Had to fight the wind, needlefish, and grass but that’s where the fish were.  Biggest fish of the day was caught on a shad rig! Great solo day on the water!  ( Note white shad rig in mouth of  trout by the landing net)

Phone Calls Stopped!

504 258 4064
We set out Sat morning to fish th OLL rodeo.  My 13 yr old was with his 2 buddies in his 14 ft Carolina skiff that I recently got for him and me with brother-in -law and his 6 yr old. When we got to Lake Catherine we split up and agreed to call if anything was biting. So for the next half  hour I’m getting phone calls every 5 minutes asking me if we are catching any…..no was the answer every time.  Then the phone calls mysteriously stopped coming, so I said we better go check on them. They were about 2 miles away over near Unknown Pass.  We came up on them and all 3 were reeling in fish!  I hollered to them ….”did y’all just start catching fish”? They said “no we’ve got about 15 in the boat”.  I said “Thanks for the phone call!!” Funny how the calls stopped. They said “well , we were busy catching fish”.????  Anyway , we pulled up near them and proceeded to put 38 nice trout in the boat, while they ended up with 29.  They could have had more but they got antsy and wanted to go somewhere else….don’t know why.  The bite got a little slow but we just moved about 100yds and started up again.  The needle fish got to be a pain at one point, but we just moved over about 50 yds . Our little guy caught the biggest redfish of his life…31 inches and got 1st place in ;the rodeo. We got hungry at 11:30 and headed in to the Dock for food and drinks so we left them biting…Great day on the water, and fun and fun at the rodeo after!   All fish caught right around the corner from Unknown pass in the same spot we caught a lot last winter….good news that they are already in the area.
