Nominations Sought for Texas Fishing Hall of Fame

ATHENS, Texas -- Nearly every Texan knows someone who deserves to be recognized for significant contributions to the sport of fishing. Now's your chance to let others know about that fishing legend.

The public is encouraged to submit nominations to the Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame until Jan. 31. One nominee will be chosen by an independent selection committee and inducted into the Hall of Fame during the annual banquet, which will be May 17.

The Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame is housed at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. It honors anglers, fisheries professionals and organizations that have made a lasting contribution to fishing in Texas.

Last year's inductee, Kathy Magers, legendary lady angler and television fishing show host, was honored for her contribution to youth and women's education. Prior inductees include Floyd Mabry, Jackie Hewlett, R.D. Hull, Bob Kemp, Sugar Ferris, Charles Inman, Leonard Ranne, and the Sabine River Authority.

Any Texas resident either living or deceased who has had a lasting impact benefiting freshwater fishing or fisheries management in Texas is eligible for consideration. Texas-based organizations and Texas offices of national organizations are also eligible to be nominated. Nominees may be submitted in any one of five categories: Legislative/State or Federal Agency, Angler, Fishing or Tackle Industry, Communicator, or Educator. Only one nominee overall will be inducted each year. Selection will be based upon the significance of the nominee's contribution.

To submit a nomination:

  • Obtain an official nomination form available on line (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fish/infish) or from the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (903) 676-2277, Ext. 228.
  • Complete the nomination form and mail it to the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, c/o Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, 5550 FM 2495, Athens, Texas 75752, or fax to (903) 676-3474 by the deadline.
  • Include copies of supporting documentation (testimonials, videos, photos, samples, etc.)
  • The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31. Nomination forms postmarked after that date will not be accepted.
  • Nomination forms and all materials submitted with them become the property of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and may not be returned.
